Introduction
For more than ten years, Astro Studios has worked closely with photographer Gareth Gatrell, developing a visual identity and digital presence that reflects the quality, creativity and versatility of his work.
Our relationship began with the creation of Gareth’s logo and brand identity, establishing a distinctive visual language that could sit comfortably alongside his photography and communicate the professional, creative nature of his work.
Since then, our collaboration has evolved across a wide range of image-led and brand projects, most recently culminating in a complete redesign and rebuild of Gareth’s online portfolio.
Visual Identity and Portfolio Website for Internationally Renowned Photographer Gareth Gatrell
The Challenge
For a photographer, a website isn't simply a place to display work. It is often the first point of contact with a potential client — a digital calling card that needs to make an immediate impression.
Gareth works across a diverse range of photographic genres and commissions, with his work having been commissioned by major film studios including Marvel Studios, Amazon MGM, Hulu, Paramount and Netflix. His website therefore needed to do more than showcase great photography.
It needed to:
- Put the photography firmly at the centre of the experience.
- Make a strong and immediate visual impact.
- Allow potential clients to reach the relevant genre of photography with as few clicks as possible.
- Create a seamless, intuitive user experience across a substantial portfolio.
- Reflect Gareth's creativity and collaborative approach.
- Communicate the premium quality and dynamic nature of his work and service.
The challenge was to create something that felt distinctive without distracting from the photography, while making a large and varied body of work effortless to navigate.
The Approach
Astro approached the project as both a visual and user-experience challenge.
Having worked with Gareth for many years and already developed his brand identity, we had a strong understanding of the personality behind the business and the level of work the website needed to represent.
The new platform was designed around the photography itself, with a streamlined structure that allows visitors to quickly explore the different genres and commissions Gareth is known for.
Every element was considered with one question in mind:
How can we get the right image in front of the right client as quickly and effectively as possible?
The result is a clean, dynamic digital experience where the work takes centre stage, while the underlying structure provides a clear and intuitive route through the portfolio.
The Result
The finished website gives Gareth a distinctive digital platform that works as an extension of his brand and his photography.
Rather than simply presenting a collection of images, the new site creates an experience that reflects the qualities Gareth brings to his own work: creativity, collaboration, attention to detail and the ability to deliver high-end, dynamic results.
Most importantly, the website has been designed around the way potential clients actually use a photographic portfolio — allowing them to discover relevant work quickly while creating the kind of first impression that matches the standard of the photography itself.
A Long-Term Creative Partnership
More than a single website project, Gareth's story is an example of how a strong creative partnership can develop over time.
From logo design and brand identity, through ongoing image-led projects, to a complete digital transformation, Astro has worked alongside Gareth for more than a decade to ensure that his visual presence continues to represent the quality and ambition of his work.
Brand identity. Digital design. Website development. One long-term creative partnership.
